Welcome to Brightline Defense’s 2021 Virtual Open House
Brightline’s Air Quality Monitoring Program
As traffic congestion returns to the Bay Area, Brightline, along with volunteers from Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) and Central City SRO Collaborative (CCSROC), has been conducting a traffic count as a part of the Brightline Air Quality Monitoring Program.
With 19 air quality sensors now in communities such as South of Market, the Tenderloin, and Chinatown, Brightline and its community partners have started traffic counts to better understand air quality impacts for local street congestion.
Brightline’s 2020-2021 Reports
LITTLE ROOM TO BREATHE: EVALUATING AIR QUALITY & HEALTH IMPACTS IN SAN FRANCISCO’S SINGLE ROOM OCCUPANCY (SRO) BUILDINGS
Emerging from the pandemic and 2020 wildfire season, nonprofit Brightline Defense releases a first-of-its-kind report studying climate change impacts upon tenants living in some of the nation’s densest and poorest housing conditions. As wildfire risk escalates with a deepening drought and historic heat waves in 2021, Single Room Occupancy (SRO) communities are disproportionately affected due to little access to indoor air filtration, personal protective equipment, preexisting health conditions, and crowded living conditions.
TRANSITIONING TO A GREEN ECONOMY: OFFSHORE WIND
As California begins the transition to a green economy, Brightline addresses equity concerns for environmental justice communities and highlights the opportunities of renewable energy through our newly published policy report. In the midst of a global pandemic and changing climate, offshore wind offers a silver lining for California’s frontline communities in need of economic recovery and cleaner air.
Construction Bridge Program Cycle 11
Construction Bridge Program Cycle 11 used Virtual Reality (VR) headsets as a part of their training. Read “Organized Labor’s” article on Brightline’s job training program and usage of VR technology for underserved youth in Bayview-Hunters Point. The job training program brings together three nonprofits, Community Youth Center (CYC) of San Francisco, A. Philip Randolph Institute, and Mission Hiring Hall, as well as the City’s pre-apprenticeship program, CityBuild Academy.
The Brightline Podcast
This year, Brightline launched the Brightline Podcast which explores local environmental justice (EJ) issues in the Bay Area, highlighting the work of activists, decision-makers, and community-based organizations like ours. Listen to community organizers talk about their experiences and resilience.
