Brightline Policy Fellowship Summer 2023
Brightline Defense is a San Francisco-based environmental justice (EJ) non-profit that works to promote sustainability in low-income communities and communities of color. Our EJ campaigns often focus on renewable energy, air quality, and local hiring policies. For instance, we advocate for local, low-income communities to have better access to affordable energy as well as good-paying jobs in multiple sectors.
During Summer 2023, Brightline’s Policy Fellow will engage in a wide range of policy and legal advocacy at the local, regional, and state levels. Brightline engages policy makers and administrative law stakeholders at various levels of government, including the City and County of San Francisco, the SF Commission on the Environment, California Public Utilities Commission, California Energy Commission, Bay Conservation and Development Commission, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the California Legislature. While conducting policy and legal research, policy fellows will also further develop public speaking and community organizing skills.
The following qualifications are ideal for Brightline’s Policy Fellow:
- Demonstrated experience in executing succinct research and writing projects
- Capacity to grow in research, writing, and revision skills to support Brightline publications such as memos or policy reports
- Interest in Brightline’s policy and programmatic work including development of clean energy in California and air quality monitoring
- Capacity and desire to work with diverse communities and neighborhoods in San Francisco
- Commitment to socioeconomic justice within the environmental movement
- Ability to take precise notes and communicate learnings
- Familiarity with basic data analysis in R or Python is a strong plus
- Familiarity with Adobe software (Photoshop, Illustrator) a strong plus
Policy Fellows are highly encouraged to apply for and leverage additional external funding from their academic institutions, and applications that identify external funding will be prioritized. Policy Fellows without external funding will receive a monthly stipend minimum of $1,500, not to exceed $4,000 for 2.5 months. Applications submitted before February 24th at 5pm PT will also be given priority.
Policy Fellows are expected to spend 24 hours a week through hybrid work: at least 1 day in-person, 2 days remote.
